Soul Sisters is an urban fantasy novel about African-American twin sisters Ani and Dana who have a rather unique secret: one sister is human while the other is a vampire. While the sisters have lived peacefully with each other for many years one fateful night will change both their lives forever. When a drunken man tries to attack Dana (the human sister) Ani (the vampire sister) protects her sister with all of her ferocious power.

However, when the vampire’s leader Donovan finds out about the public display he calls for the sisters to be assassinated for disobedience. Ani and Dana now are in for the fight of their lives to protect each other as well as the lives of their dedicated friends who have joined them on their mission for survival. If Dana and Ani can make it through this time of uncertainty, Ani can take her new place as vampire queen. Soul Sisters is expected to be a trilogy; The book also features a multicultural cast of characters that brings a new edge of chic to the vampire world.

I am so excited to kick off this 10 Day Tour!!  Janiera has kindly stopped by to visit and share some of her thought regarding her new book. I feel like she's a book reader/reviewer just like us, so it's extra-awesome that she has written a book! I can't wait to read my copy.... especially after this interview!!!

1 - Thanks for coming Janiera!!!  What inspired you to write your story?  I love the sister theme, can you share why you wrote about sisters in particular?

Thanks Laura. I always wish had a sister (although I love my brother) and the bond between twins is incredible. I just loved the idea of writing about two sisters who were so different but would do anything for each others.

2 - What's your favorite scene?  Can you share an excerpt?

You know I really don’t have a favorite scene. Strange right? I love the entire book however this scene came pretty darn close!
With a noise that sounded like a crack of lightning Christian jumped into the air. His body seemed to sputter and shake out of control. Clumps of fur flew through the air in many different directions. Then suddenly what looked like an oversized dog appeared before them sturdy and strong. His coat of fur was shiny, smooth a deep chocolate color that glittered under the mist. Christian’s mouth opened wide and roared with such thunder that it rattled their ear drums. His teeth looked like large razors that could pierce through anything that came his way. Dana was surprised that she didn’t feel any fear toward Christian; in all of his enormity he was actually quite beautiful.
Ani and Diego smiled slightly at his magnificence. Yes, they were supposed to be enemies but he wasn’t one of “them,” he was different.  He had been hurt in the past just as much as they were hurting right now so, they were more than proud to stand by his side. Christian growled and shook his gigantic head to the right.
He wants you to stand on his right side Ani,” Diego jumped in as narrator.  “When we raid the apartment, once we gain entery,it would be best if I were in front of Christian. Ani will be to his right and you will stay behind him at all times! There are no excuses, OK? Keep your back to him that way you can see who is coming up behind him.  Let’s practice.” He pointed to Ani  “charge Dana.”
Dana peaked out from behind Christian.  “What?” she choked out.
The only way you’re going to learn to keep a vampire at bay is if you practice it here. At home we just taught you how to fight now, we need to put it into play.” Diego looked back and forth between Dana and Ani. He was hoping Ani would give her approval but she just turned her head with a twisted snarl curling her lips. She really didn’t appreciate having to put her sister through such a frightening experience but, it was necessary to fully prepare her  for the horror she would soon encounterclosed her eyes for a moment and let the tension she felt toward Diego build up. She could feel the aggression rolling from her stomach up to her chest.  She made a mental note to not put her strength on full blast. Her once soft and pouty lips curled up into a deep and ugly snarl rising like a curtain above her teeth. The deadly sharp teeth descended like trap doors creating a pointy stake.
Dana took a deep breath and tried not to cry. This wasn’t her sister she saw standing front of her, it was a monster.  Ani charged at her at her highest speed possible when suddenly she felt something slice into the side of her neck.  The pain vibrated through her body so fast she had no defense but to fall to her knees; the earth felt like it was shaking all around her. The pressure that sliced into her throat was crushing; she knew she couldn’t be killed unless someone removed her head but, this is what it must have felt like to be close. Ani tried to blink back tears in order to see clearly. Standing above her she saw her sister with her chest puffed out like a peacock and her hand wrapped around Ani’s throat with as much strength as she could possibly muster. Dana’s arm was shaking and it looked like her sister was grinding her teeth.
“Let me go!” Ani shouted in a mutilated growl. Dana opened her hand immediately allowing Ani to drop on the forest floor like a sack of potatoes. Ani laid on the ground for a few moments panting, impressed and frightened all at the same time.
Where did my sister get all of that strength from? she wondered as she tried to pull herself off of the floor. “Oh, she’s ready,” she gave a slight smirk to her sister and then nodded her head towards Diego. Her voice was still a rough growl and she struggled to return it to her normal pitch.
“I want to make sure she’s ready. You went soft on her I can tell.” Diego pumped his fingers in and out of his palm to get the blood flowing through his hands.
“Of course, I did. I don’t want to kill my sister,” Ani answered defensively.
“Of course not, but we have to make sure she can stop a vampire at full strength and speed.  Do you think they’re going to go easy on her if they’re trying to kill her?  She has to be able to stop them long enough to get away and get back by Christian’s side if the two of them move too far apart.”
Christian growled his approval of Diego’s last statement. Dana tapped her foot nervously; Diego was bigger than her sister. She didn’t know how well she would do this time and wished he would just let her prove her strength when the time came. If the battle became too brutal maybe a passive death was better than being torn limb from limb. Diego went and stood at the same place Ani stood to charge. For a split second Dana realized that Diego’s face didn’t change much at all he; he looked as smooth and as sexy as ever. Then before she knew it he was rushing towards her leaving a trail of smoke behind him. Dana raised her knee and slammed it into his crotch.  She thought she heard a bone crack but, she knew she couldn’t stop now.  She slammed her elbow into the back of Diego’s neck until she saw him drop and let out a soft growl. After a few seconds she stepped back and placed her hands in the air; her stomach was churning. How could she have hurt this tough guy so badly? She felt particularly bad knowing that he had never done anything bad to her personally. The pain on the big man’s face was making her feel on edge.
“You’re ready,” Diego said while pushing his hands deep into the dirt in order to stand straight up again.. He simply gave her a hard pat on the shoulder and went to stand beside Ani again.

3 - Please share something personal about you!!  Favorite read? Favorite memory?

My favorite read is The Help. The book literally changed my life. After reading that book I know I needed to do more to support my beliefs on equality and how just one person can make a big difference. I loved the book to death and the movie brought me to tears. I’d never been so moved by a read in my life!

4 - Are you writing now?  When can we hope for book 2 in this series?

I’m currently writing the second book in the Soul Sisters trilogy! I don’t have a name yet for the second book and may hold a contest soon to pick one. ;) I’ve got so much going on this year but, I’m striving to have to the second book out by Christmas!
